When it’s Time to Get Organized
If you have ever asked yourself, “Will the clutter EVER end?” If you have tried in vain to ‘get organized’, I have news for you. You CAN conquer the clutter, but only if you get serious about it. Too many times, people start off by picking up little things here and there around the house, with no focus in their efforts. Then they become frustrated, because they don’t see any results. In order to effectively de-clutter your life, you must begin with a plan and a goal. As you work towards that goal and see steady progress, you will stay motivated and finally get organized once and for all.
After you have de-cluttered and put a system in place, staying organized is not so difficult. The first thing to do is to just do it! Take the initiative to tackle one project to begin with. Choose an area of a room, even just one drawer or bookcase that you want to de-clutter and start there. Take absolutely every item off of that bookcase, shelf, etc. and put it on the floor. Get yourself a few empty baskets and a trash bag and start sorting. Everything should either go into a pile to ‘keep’, ‘go’, or the trash. Make a quick decision and put the item where it belongs, then move on to the next. |

You
will be surprised how quickly the trash bag fills when you are focused
and motivated enough to really recognize some things as trash. Items
that you put in the go pile can be sold at a garage sale or donated
later.
Once
you have made this initial sort, you can begin to further consider
which items you want to put back in the same place, and which ones need
to go someplace else. If you find that you have a lot of things that go
to the bathroom, for example, you might want to get a small basket or
container to put bathroom items into, and take them in all at the same
time.
|
|
| After
you have sorted through everything in an area, you will need to start
figuring out what, if anything, you will need to get to help you
organize the items. For a drawer, you might purchase a tray with
compartments, for example, or for small crafting supplies, you might
consider a tackle box. Before you purchase anything, measure the space
available and know what you need. There are lots of nifty looking
organizational tools, boxes and gadgets, but they are no good to you if
they don’t match your needs. After you put things back in that one
area, you can move on to the next. By working systematically throughout
the house, you will see progress and stay motivated, while getting
organized a little at a time. Work a few minutes each day and you will
see progress. |
